Calgary is a City Blessed with Blue Skies, Stunning Mountains & Beautiful River Valleys, Calgary was not blessed with natural Lakes. In 1967 the Keith Construction Company came up with the idea to excavate a 52 acre piece of bald Prairie into what is now the Community of Lake Bonavista to create the first man made lake in Canada, the prototype for all of the man made Lakes that Calgary families now enjoy. The man-made lakes were built by Genstar Development Company in exclusive communities offering access to the private Lakes only to the homeowners in the Lake Communities. There are 10 Communities in & around Calgary that have man made lakes: 8 lakes were built in S.E Calgary: Lake Bonavista, Lake Bonaventure of Lake Bonavista, Midnapore, Sundance, Chaparral, Lake McKenzie, Auburn Bay & Mahogany; Arbour Lake is the only Community in N.W. Calgary with a Lake; Harmony in Rocky View County offers a new Man-made lake on the West side of the City & Coral Springs is the sole Lake Community on the N.E. side of Calgary.

Residents in each Lake Community pay a Home Owners Association Fee annually to maintain the Lake & ensure the Resident Associations can provide Year-Round Programming for the Families who buy homes in these amenity rich neighborhoods.

The addition of man made lakes to many of Calgary’s Communities has changed the landscape in Calgary and has provided families with non-motorized outdoor activities at the Lake like swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding & fishing. Yes! Each Lake is stocked annually with Fish that residents can take out of the Lake. The Lakes are a winter playground too with Skating paths plowed on the lake, outdoor hockey rinks & family bonfires.
