CALGARY — A national survey of prospective homebuyers, who intend to buy within the next 24 months, indicates nearly one-in-five in Alberta are single people.

Monday, January 14, 2013 - Calgary Region Building Permits Up More Than 10% From Last Year
CALGARY — The value of building permits in the Calgary region was $372.1 million in November, according to Statistics Canada.
The federal agency reported Thursday that permits in the Calgary census metropolitan area were down 5.9 per cent from the previous month but up 10.8 per cent from a year ago.
In Alberta, building permits hit $1.2 billion in November, up 1.5 per cent on a monthly basis and an increase of 26.3 per cent from November 2011.

CALGARY — Alberta’s economy continues to lead the pack across a range of indicators and solid growth will persist in 2013, supported by robust oilsands investment, says Scotiabank’s Global Forecast.
The bank is forecasting the province will lead Canadian economic growth with 3.4 per cent this year followed by 3.0 per cent in 2013.
Employment growth of 3.1 per cent this year and 1.7 per cent in 2013 will also be the best in the country, according to the report.

TORONTO — The Globe and Mail reports that Finance Minister Jim Flaherty would like to privatize Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. within five to 10 years.
The Globe’s story is based on remarks Flaherty made during an interview.

Residents in high-rise condo buildings and many other types of multi-family homes are not part of the City of Calgary’s recycling program and until now have been pretty much left to their own devices when it came to recycling.

A national database which estimates the worth of houses may contain errors that have fuelled inflation in the Canadian property market, where a steady rise in home prices has fanned fears of a bubble, a newspaper reported.

Monday, October 15, 2012 - New Housing Construction Positive For Calgary Region In Short-Term
CALGARY — Short-term expectations for housing starts in the Calgary region are positive, according to the Conference Board of Canada.
The board said Monday that in the Calgary census metropolitan area in September the seasonally-adjusted annual rate of new home construction was 11,022 units. That was up from 8,846 a year ago.

With an increasing trend in one-person households in Canada, more people these days are buying homes on their own.
According to TD Canada Trust research, 47 per cent of first-time homebuyers in Alberta buy their first home on their own (without a co-purchaser).
In Canada, that percentage is 43 per cent.
